Grew up in Harlan. He played baseball in high school. He worked in the coal mines alongside Boyd Crowder. His father Arlo was a criminal, his mother Frances died when he was a kid. Father remarried Helen, who was Frances' sister. He went on to become a U.S. Marshal and was in Miami. After a justified shooting to clean up the image he was sent to Lexington. Raylan finds himself back in Kentucky, a place he said he'd never return.
